India sees decline in COVID-19 cases, Omicron wave peaked on January 21

The COVID-19 cases in India have been dropping over the last two weeks, after a peak was reached on January 21 with 3.47 lakh new infections in a day, stated the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. 

Kerala and Mizoram continue to be a cause for concern as the positivity rate and case numbers are increasing there. The Omicron-driven third wave peaked in the country on January 21 when 3.47 lakh new cases were reported in a day. During the second wave, the country saw a peak on May 7, 2021 when over 4.14 lakh cases were recorded. India registered 1.72 lakh new infections on Wednesday, which was half the cases recorded on January 21, revealed the government.

Joint secretary Lav Agarwal said that there are still some areas where cases are rising and COVID management strategies need to be in place as we are still witnessing high numbers of cases… (ET Healthworld, February 4, 2022)
